Switched to Covad - Home network no longer works

I previously had a home network with my DirecTV connection, but they went under and I switched to Covad. I switched all DTV DSL blockers, cables, the modem, hell I even switched out their Y-jack for Covad's to make sure everything would work. It doesn't.

If I hook up the Covad modem directly to one PC using the crossover cable they provided me, the internet connetion will work. If I plug the cable they provided me (or any other cable [crossover or not]) into the WAN port of my router and the other end into the modem, the internet connection will not work.

This is theexact same way I connected my network when I was using DirecTV. Covad however uses PPPOE to connect whereas DTV only needed to be plugged in.

I called Covad but they said they were not authorized to troubleshoot a network. The tech mentioned something about telling the router or comuters to authenticate or something (I really don't know that much about networking).

Can anyone help me out?

Thank you,
Jeff

You need to setup your router to use PPPoE to authenticate. Not sure what router you have, but I know the Linksys routers have a website that you connect into to do administration. In there, and option exists for authentication method, set it to PPPoE and also give it the username and password that you were given from Covad.

Other routers may have you connect in through a telnet session to a specific port, or connect through a USB or COM port. You need to look at your router's manual and find the configuration section. Some older routers do not support PPPoE. Some also have had it patched in with a firmware upgrade. You may need to do one if you have an older router (i.e. 2years or so).
