Switched Receptacles

I went over to the parents new place to hook up a computer. The room the computer is going in has two receptacles that are on a light switch.

If I break the metal tab on the receptacle closest to the switch, will the second outlet be hot all the time? I have a suspicion it depends on how it's wired but let's assume it's wired to code.

The switch is controlling power to both receptacles. If the switch is off, then there is nothing you can do to have either receptacle on short of linking them to a new circuit or removing the switch.

You may be hosed. If it's run in conduit then you may be able to add a second conductor to the switch to have both switched and unswitched power.

Breaking the tab just sepeates the two receptacles, so one will have no power. If the switch is just controlling the two outlets, you can wire nut the two wires on the switch together and get a blank cover. Then, they will be hot all the time.
