January 30 UPDATE: Sometime yesterday evening the port finally finished and my new phone started receiving calls. A big thank you to everyone for informing me!

I switched my cell phone service from Verizon to T-Mobile, in part because Verizon's network would always drop my calls and I did not have service at my house which happens to be in middle of Atlanta. Anyways, they said that the switch would take place last night at midnight and although it partially did, only my old phone can receive calls. Both phones can place calls and both have the same number on caller ID. Only when I call my number, my old Verizon phone rings and not the new one.

I would ask the T-Mobile people, but their current hold time is like 40-60 minutes and I figured I would get a faster response from you all. Any idea how long it takes for the number switch to be completed so that I only need to carry around my new phone?

Yeah, you will need to turn your old phone off. That should help complete the port over.

OK, my old phone is turned off now. I was thinking I would give it another day or two to totally switch over before I waited on hold for however long it would take to get a real person. Thanks!

I just got off the phone doing a switch over myself. Definitely calling to India on that one with nextel. If the lady said "thank you, please stay on the line" one more time I was going to lose it. She was all confused, we could barely understand each other. Call took 3 times as long as it should have.

I can't stand talking to anyone in India. We just about dropped Dell as our companies main hardware provider because we couldn't get reliable tech support when we called cause all their calls were being routed to call centers in India. We were like a week from switching when they announced that tech support would be brought back inside the US borders. Fortunately with T-Mobile, everyone I have talked to sounded 100% American to me.

Some people are still waiting to port their number from AT&T to (anyone). Some going to t-mobile have been waiting since 11/24/03. That's why AT&T is being sued by the FCC. Anyway, pick up a house phone and call t-mobile to get an update. They can tell you approximately how long it may take to finish transfering. Don't expect good news.

I'm not feeling as worried, I'm switching from Verizon, not AT&T. I really feel sorry for all those people who were with AT&T and stuck in that mess; from what I hear the service there is really horrible. Verizon's customer service pretty much sucks too. That's another reason why I'm leaving them; there's that and the new phone I get with T-Mobile blows every other offer out of the water! Being grouped under a large business account probably doesn't hurt!

Really? I've been with them for 3 years now and i absolutly love their CS, which is one of the main reasons I'll stay with them despite a +5-10 price difference. They sent me tworeplacement phones on a phone out of warrenty by one year (the model was defective, they knew it, and after the first one, which was the same model, they upgraded me to a new one ^_^... all free of charge, overnight shipping on everything).

So why do you not like their CS? Most people say thats one of verizon's strongest's points

must be nice! The asshats at Cingular wouldn't release our old phone numbers to TMobile. Now we have to get all new business cards and everything.

When I first got my phone, about 2 years ago, I found it wouldn't work at my house. The signal just wasn't any good as soon as I got to my front door. I called Verizon to submit a complaint. Since most cell companies want to know where they have dead spots in coverage, I figured Verizon would want to know too. As it turns out, according to Verizon CS, I am the one to blame for bad cell reception at my home. "There must be something in your home causing you to have bad reception and signal loss. We won't be sending out network team out to survey your area." I tried to point out that other carriers like T-Mobile and Cingular work just fine at my house, but Verizon doesn't. This was confirmed on many, many occasions by family and friends.

About a month before I switched, I contacted Verizon one more time to see if they might have changed their approach. Same story, I was to blame, not their network. Sorry, we can't help you! Goodbye.

So I switched to T-Mobile and Verizon no longer will have any of my business.

Not releasing numbers is in direct violation of FCC regulations. Litigation happy?

I don't think the FCC is requiring number portability in all markets yet.

Oh yeah. You tend to forget these things when you're in a market that usually gets everything first;)

According to the rules: http://wireless.fcc.gov/wlnp/

Wireless providers not in the top 100 areas have until May 24, 2004 or 6 months from the initial request (whichever is later) to port numbers. At the absolute latest, if a carrier did not receive a request to port a number until May 23, 2004, they would have until November 23, 2004 to port its numbers. After that, they could be sued. If you are in a top 100 market, you can sick the FCC on them now if they won't port your number.
