Switch vs. Router vs. Hub

I'd like to use my Apple Airport Extreme for my internet gateway and wireless router, and I'd also like to run a wired network on the same subnet (I think). Mostly I'd like to use the wired ethernet router portion of my airport to be the router for everything and have everthing else on a "splitter". Would that be another wired router or a switch or a hub? And, I'd like a good description of each, I haven't found a very good one on wikipedia. Thanks in advance.
