Switch to Vista or Stay with xp home

Pretty self explanatory, recently built a new system, got a version of vista havent even opened it yet. Had a guy at the computer shop, employee there seems pretty knowledgable tell me whatever I do dont upgrade to vista for gaming. Is he right or crazy? Should I send my version of vista back unopened?
