Switch to three port router

I have an 8 port switch and a 3 port router. All three ports on the router are full. Can I plug extra computers into the switch and then plug the switch into the router. The Router is a D-Link 713P. I'll be getting a wireless device or two, but these questions relate to wired connections.

Do I use a patch cable or a crossover cable if I go from the switch to the router? The switch has 8 ports plus a WAN port. The router's WAn port goes to my cable modem.

The switch to router connection should be fine. This AN FAQ explains about cables. I may be wrong, but my impression is that newer switches are smart enough to handle whatever cable you use. Personally, I've managed to never use a crossover cable for anything.

Yup you'll be just fine. I don't think the 713p has an uplink port so plug one end of the cat5 into the router, then the other end into a port on the switch if you're using a crossover cable. If the switch has an uplink port you can use it and a patch cable

From the sounds of it, the switch has an uplink port, it is the WAN port:Q

Plug the router (one of the 3 ports) into the WAN of the switch, now you have 8 ports of the switch (LAN side), and 2 from the router!
