Switch question

You'll need a router to help with the internet, DHCP, and enough cabling. I'm pretty sure someone should be savy enough out of the 12 to handle the basic setup if you have all the equipment.

Here is a basic analogy:
Knock on every door in a hotel floor to find who ordered the roomservice (hub)
Now imagine going to the correct door without buggin everyone on the floor (switch)

So you're saying a switch is cleaner/more efficient to use? Also, I will be using a D-link 4 port router, do I just connect lets say port one on the router to oprt 1 on the switch, then have my buddies connect off of the other 15 ports on the switch? My friends don't know sh* about internet.

Broadband Modem --> D-Link Router (WAN) --> New 16 port Switch (Any port) --> Computers

Switches are better. (I don't even think you can find hubs except through ebay)

Features on your new switch:

Non-blocking wire-speed architecture
3.2Gbps Switching capacity Up to 200Mbps per port
True Plug & Play
Auto-sensing / Auto-detection
Supports Industrial Standards

That means you don't have to worry about cable type. Just follow the first diagram and everything will work ok. I would also suggest powering up the devices in that order first to ensure there is nothing else you should have to mess with.

Now go and suprise your friends with your saavy networking skills 🙂.
