you can plug it into any one. by convention it is usually the highest numbered port though, for instance, port 8 on an 8-port router or port 5 on a 5-port.

Actually it depends on the switch. Many contemporary switches will be auto MDI/MDX. So each port can double as an uplink port. Older hubs and switches typically had an uplink port, though it was normally port 1 not 8 from my experience. Semantics there. You could also use a crossover cable from a Lan port on your router's LAN side, to a non uplink port or non auto MDI/MDX port on the second switch
