Hey guys. I have set up here a web server for my web camera and forwarded a port on my router to this computer.
Now my cousin in Poland he shares internet through a switch. How would this work there? Is it possible to set up a web server if someone uses a switch?

Thanks in advance.

If he is using a switch (With no Router) then he might have more then 1 IP from his ISP.(If he has Multiple PC's connected)
meaning he don't need a Router to split 1 IP for all PC's.

Unless ofcourse he is using one of his PC's as a Router.

You May want to list what he has setup exactly.

But if he don't have no Firewall/Router running, than he should be able to have a web server running without having to forward any ports.

get a router
setup router to distribute DHCP address
set regular computer to accept DHCP IP address (ie:192.168.0.1-192.168.0.10)
set server IP outside the DHCP range (ie:192.168.0.11)
in the menu for the router, foreward whatever port you want to your servers IP address (which is outside the DHCP range , ie:192.168.0.11)

It doesnt matter how your cousin connects to the internet only that he can connect. If he is only running a network with a switch then he must be running a proxy server or Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in windows. If he is using ICS then he can setup a route on the box to forward incoming connections to the computer running the webserver.

he says it's a switch though (although he's not too computer literate, someone may have just told him that it's a switch)

Its probably a router with a switch built in.
Tell him to ipconfig and to get the ip of the gateway usualy 198.168.0.1 on that ip scheme
Then put that address in the web browser and login to the router with admin admin or something like that

Seems there is a Router setup before reaching his Switch i'd say.

Is this connection in his home, or in a Dorm of some sort?

I've heard of some dorms/areas that give Internet Access through a Router.
maybe thats why he is getting a LAN IP,when he only has a Switch setup.

To see, maybe have him hook the network cable directly into his PC (instead of into the Switch) and run the ipconfig command again to see what IP he gets this time.

Well I installed remotePC software on his computer and I'm trying to connect to the router (tried both speedstream and 10.0.0.1) and I cannot connect. (in both firefox and IE). What do I do guys?

Oy!

the router's IP is not 10.0.0.1 , i think thats the IP of his modem, which here is not reason to connect.

What u have to do is FIND What kind of router he is using the switch has nothing to so with this. FInd the router

login in as 192.168.0.1 if its dlink , 192.168.2.1 if its linksys ,192.168.123.1 if its SMC (i think)

than in there u could open the ports and only in the router. unless he has software firwalls..

u have to give us the correct info... FINd what router he is using, and look throught its manual or DL u should find how to open ports on his Router NOT SWITCH..

I believe you need to connect to http://10.0.0.1 in your IE or whatever browser you use.

That is if its the Speedstream 5660.

This is what you should see

Or you may want to even type in "speedstream" without the quotes in your browser.

But the easiest way if none of this works is to just have him call his ISP so they can tell him how to log into his Routers Configuration.

If you can get to that screen you should be fine.
