Switch keeps disconnecting me

Just got Cable 2 weeks ago, we didn't have a long enough piece of cat5 to go from the router to my PC, so I am conencted via a 12 port stackable switch. The problem I am having is that every now and then, I get the message (in windows 2000) 'The Network Cable is unplugged', imediatly followed by another message saying that it is reconnected. This isn't a problem normally, but when playing online games it results in the game pausing, and so is pretty annoying. As I typed this it has done it 3 times, but it does not usually happen that often. The switch manual says that it will reconnect you if you are causing allot of collisions, but I don't know how this could be the case. My network card is a 3com 3C905B-TX (PCI).

Thanks.

Two possibilities:

You might be having an autonegotiation problem. Try to force your NIC to 100Mb/s, full duplex. (Go into Properties of your network connection, then click on the "configure" button under the NIC name. Navigate through there and you should find somewhere to set speed/duplex).

You could also have a cabling issue. Try and replace the cable(s) and see if it re-occurs.

Okay, I changed it to full duplex and it still did the same thing, I have now changed it to half duplex (I don't know whether the switch supports full duplex or not, it is quite old I think), and so far so good, but the problem is sporadic at best, so I cannot be sure that it is fixed. Fingers crossed and Thankyou :)

[edit] It is still doing it. I guess I will have to try another machine on the same cable and see if it has the same problem. I did get the network card because it used to belong to my old school, but was somehow 'not compatible' with the 3com switches they were using, maybe this is the same problem [/edit]
