I just recently purchased this laptop with the celeron in it and was wondering if the board in it would support any p4 centrino, or other processor...if so, would it increase battary life ? thanks...

I think this belongs in the notebook forum. Anyway, It *Might* work with a P4, but I doubt it will work with a centrino, because centrino uses socket 479 as opposed to 478.

Does it have a Celeron M or a Pentium 4 based Celeron? If it's the latter, you will definitely not be able to put in a Pentium M.

Also, I think you are confused. There is no such thing as a "P4 Centrino."

thanks for clearing that up.

What is in it right now is a celeron M. I am just curious as to whether, it is even possible to put in a P4 or a centrino at all.

that program tells me i have a TOSHIBA HBT10 motherboard. the celeron is a 400mhz.

I am wondering is it even possible to throw on a new processor even if i wanted too..

Go DL CPUZ, google it for the site.

Also, theoretically with a celeron M which should have 478 pins just like the centrino. the question is, is there enough space, increased heat can be handled etc.

Now my question is:

why do you want a centrino.

A celeron M is clocked down just like the centrino, and the wattage useage in significantly decreased.

This processor is not based on normal Pentium 4's but on the Pentium M (centrino) so the battery life is pretty much the same. If you want to improve battery life look at other solutions, if you have a 5400 rpm HDD look at taking the perfomance hit and get a 4200rpm for better battery life. Also see if your manf has a high capacity battery for that notebook. ETC, there are many ways to try improve battery life.

The only thing that you would get out of upgradeing to a centrino/P-M is a performance increase.

Hope this helps!!!!!

Celeron M's have half the cache, which lowers performance. Also, speed step is disabled, which actually causes a wattage and heat increase, since it cannot dynamically change it's clock speed and voltage.

The socket in your laptop should accept a Pentium M, however if you pick one with a higher clockspeed than your current processor, heat may become a problem. Additionally, I am not sure if it is possible to remove your current processor (could have a heatsink soldered in place or something else that would prevent it).

Hello, Is anyone still following this thread? It looks like two weeks since the last message.

Anyhow, I purchased my A85 about 6 weeks ago for $449 (on sale and after rebates) from Best Buy and I'm "getting the itch" to play with it.

Are there any upgrades (or downgrades) that would increase performance, decrease battery drain, etc.?

The unit is "stock-out-of-the-box" except I doubled SDRAM from 256MB to 512MB (and honestly didn't notice much of a change).

I have used it on a one-week "real estate safari" through central gulf florida and a 4-day business trip. It's worked well and I'm happy with it.
