I have an Asus G51J laptop that I generally move all over. I often use it with my Acer monitor over HDMI--the monitor has built in speakers much better than my laptop speakers.

However, every time I plug in my laptop to the monitor I have to manually set it as the default playback device in Windows. Vice versa when I unplug from the monitor.

Is there any way to do this automatically on Windows 7?

I used to have a similar laptop/HDMI setup. I think it may work the way you want if you connect via HDMI and then select the HDMI sound device as default sound device. It should then use this whenever its available, or drop down to the alternative (built in speakers) when it isn't available. At least I think that's how mine was done, it used to just work without thinking about it after that.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way for me :(

When I'm unplugged from HDMI, I get no sound at all if I don't change the default device back to Speakers.
