didn't want to run more cat5 to my tivo's. thought i could use a network switch to connect them both to the same cable--> router. but how will their IPs work then?

To expand this a bit..

Each device on your network has a unique IP address behind the router, thus each Tivo will have a separate IP. Your router, however, only has a single Internet IP address and both tivos will use it when they communicate via the Internet.

A switch connected to a router is just an extension of that router - It adds more ports that function IDENTICALLY to those which are physically on the router itself.

Yes, what Garion said. As long as there is a router in your setup somewhere, you only need to have one. All your other switches/hubs/etc will send the connection back to the primary router to get the IP address for each device.
