I lift weights and run sometimes when I work out but I would like to know the benefits of swimming as an exercise tool. Can it be used as a cardio workout?

Yes, most definitely. It's excellent cardio and very good for your joints, low impact and all. Combine your running with swimming and biking and you will be a triathlete. :D

Swimming is probably the best cardio exercise you can do. You use everything while doing it, and there's also the great feeling of gliding through water.

After thousands of miles on elite swim team it gets old. The feeling of gliding I mean.

Boredom is agreed. I spent 18 years of my life swimming competitively. But you have to agree that eventually your mind starts to wander and you zone out. But now they have waterproof radios and such if one were so inclined.
