Congratulations on learning how to swim. My mother could not swim at all and it's simply not something I can understand, not knowing how to swim. you toss a baby into the water and they will swim.

Practice will make you comfortable in the water and that's what is important. Here's an easy tip - hold yourself down underwater while holding onto the ladder until you feel you MUST have air. Then let out about 1/2 of your air.

How do I breathe? Quickly and often.

Depends which stroke you're using. When doing the crawl, I remember my coach telling us to try to touch our shoulder with our chin when turning our head to breathe. Breast stroke requires timing so you don't inhale too soon and suck water.

Speed up as you gain confidence.

Congrats! I'm surprised at the sheer number of people today that don't know how to swim. Hopefully you'll be able to pick up some more speed with practice.

if we're talking freestyle ('crawl'), it's normal to lift your mouth further above
water than physically necessary.

if you watch more experience (human) swimmers, you'll see they rotate their
heads a lot less, and use a sort of pocket of air created by their motion through
the water.

i suggest taking a coed swimming class. you lucky person.

He'll forget all about it when he gets stab by a devil ray.

Devil Ray? Really? Cmon... great joke but devil rays aren't harmful to humans.

The biggest mistake that I see new swimmers make is that they try to exhale and inhale all while their head is above water. You need to become comfortbale exhaling through both your nose and mouth as your face is in the water. This means that you'll have plenty of time to inhale when you take your head out.

Body rotation is important in the water. Rather than turning just your neck to take a breathe, rotate your entire upper torso towards the side that you want to breathe on. This turn should begin right when your hand leaves the water. As your arms continues in the air forward you can inhale to the side, almost making a circle that you can "peek" out of. When your hand enters the water in front of you again, that hole that you were peeking out of will close and you should naturally rotate back to level.
