SWIMMING question

I think in one version you can swim willy nilly throughout the pool. In the other version those floating lines are installed forcing you to swim within a lane.

public swim doesn't have the lanes, lane swim does



like poster above me says, the lane swims force you to do laps, where
as when they take off the ropes for the lanes, you are free to swim where you like

OK, so a more detailed question then:

I'm trying to teach my girlfriend how to swim. Sounds like we should go to a public swim to get:
a) shallow water
b) a relaxed environment where we're not having other swimmers behind us in a lane

?
