I do know that with DE filters that if you backwash till its clear, you have washed all of the DE out, thereby decreasing the effectiveness of the filter. As already mentioned might want to take the cover off of the filter to check it out.

DE filter? This is a sand filter, is that related? I was told by the pool shop to backwash every so often until its clear to get the algae and crap out.

DE = diotomacious (sp?) earth (aka diatoms)

sand is different, but both are popular types of filters
