I hear its 2.5 mi swim, 105 mi bike, and 26.5 mi run.

School is coming to a close for me. I should be getting my degree this quarter, and I have been feeling lately that it would be rad if I were an IronMan.

If anyone has any experience with this race, or any suggestions on how I should train, or where I should begin my information quest, it will be appreciated.

Thanks

edit: hmm after doing a little searching I found this...
http://www.ironman.com/events/ironman70.3/california70.3
I had thought the race was longer, seems a little short to me.

I always thought it would be rad if I was a Navy Seal.

that's a 1/2 ironman. I've thought about doing one, but so far I've only ever run a marathon :)

edit: Your original numbers are off too. I believe it's a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run.

Yup. Snoopdoug1's right - that's a 1/2 ironman. I'd be interested in doing one, but I don't run. Swim yes, bike yes, run no.

You have to do lots of training for an ironman. People getting ready for them pretty much do nothing but work and train.

Yea I would have no problem with the run, its the bike and the swim I feel I need help in.

Same here.... well, let me qualify that - since I would have many problems doing the run AFTER doing the swim/bike :)

all i can say is that it is amazing. To have people muster that much courage and strength... i admire them. Watching the half-ironman was amazing too. To see those folks swim... and bike, and it was on a lava field at that.

Was this an ironman in Hawaii or something?

I been thinking about doing the one down near Carlsbad, CA

Does anybody know general rules for the amount of time i should probably train for?

I do not swim or bike currently, but i do feel that i would be capable of finishing a marathon (26 mi)

A couple of the guys here did the Ironman. They are in great shape but I give them hell because their shaved legs sure are pretty ;-)

I have a coworker who participates in Iron Man competition. He is over 40 now.
I think he is insane.

Not really... i am not crazy enough to be in Kona for the Ironman  but it was the Honu Half-alon... half of the ironman, and those that won, qualify for it. it is brutal... even just seeing them do half of the Ironman... it got to well over 100F for the biking part, they swam infront of our hotel, it was amazing to watch. Like i said, i have so much respect and admiration for anyone that even trys to do it. The most wonderful thing to me was to see people hours after the main group swam and the like... there were a few people still doing it and wanting to just finish, no matter what the time.

I thought at one point that I would make an attempt at it. I started training. My plan was regular tri (for a couple years) -> half ironman -> ironman. I did my first "international" length triathlon, and I decided to hang it up. I handled the swim and bike just fine, but I hate running. I get really horrible shooting pains in my shins whenever I do it. After the swim+bike, my legs kind of gave out and I limped over the finish line.

Even if my legs were up to it, I just never got any enjoyment out of running.

Have you ever run a marathon or ridden a century? I've ridden a century and I can tell you that I wouldn't want to run a marathon after completing that...

I don't run though, it's too hard on my knees.

I already shave from my knees down, so my legs dont get shreded by my snowboard boots. I could probaby manage shaving the rest, I dont think it would bother me much.

you got the names of these Ironmen? maybe i could pm them my questions

Heh if i did it I dont have any idea where i would be finishing. I think my goal would only be to finish. I dont know how i compare to real triathletes.

I have never run a marathon, or any event. I ran XCountry in HS with good competitive times.

The furthest I have ever ran is about 15 mi, but i just stopped mostly from boredom not being tired. I just feel like it would be a good challenge to at least train like im going to run a triathlon.

I'll do the bike only.. then I'll stop for a game of hockey, and then some rock climbing :p

Swimming and running definitely not my thing.

Maybe you guys could put together an ironman relay team...

I just did a relay with my sister and my mom last year (international distance, not ironman). It was pretty fun, except for the fact that I got shafted with the run.
