I have the the big Swifty...80mm.

ANd now I have the Alpha 8045....

So all fans being equal, which one would do a better job cooling a CPU ?

The main diff I see is that the Swiftech has a thick@ss copper bottom which holds heat longer than the thin plate many heatsinks offer now.

So given that, I'm guessing that the Alpha would get a little cooler with the same CFMs a blowing.

I also am thinking that the best would be blowing and not sucking....is this correct ?

Thx

Man if you have both I'd try 'em both and find out exactly which is better with a given fan... etc. You're just gonna get a bunch of opinions in here which are worth little more than what you paid for them.(All the combinations of case/mobo/cpu/fans/ventilation/cabling that differ from your setup).

The Alpha is designed to have the fan sucking up through it. (FWIW if you leave the aluminum shroud off the top of the alpha it runs about 2-3C hotter). But while your at it I'd try it both ways (Blowing and Sucking) with and without the shroud.

I have an Alpha right now with a 92mm enermax adjustable fan on it with an amuzuma adapter. Running at 43c full load at the moment with a 26c case temp. I am using an LCD thermal probe (BIOS and softaware says CPU at 36c). I have tried with 80mm fan sucking and blowing with sucking cooling better. Even used without the shroud and saw NO difference. Tried the 92mm sucking and blowing with sucking being better. My 92mm cools better if I run at full speed but I was looking for quiet so I run it at 1/4. So it cools the exact same as my 80mm. The key to my cooling is that I set up an 80mm right next to the Alpha to exhaust all the hot air that it expells. That right there helped me drop 5c!

swifty will be better, but it will cost twice as much. I will stick to my 8045 with a L1. I am getting around 46 with this combination on a XP 1600. I got my 8045 with a YS tech fan(it sucked) from svcompucycle.com. After shipping and tax I think it was $40. The swity would be quite a bit more($30 more). Last time I looked it was selling at $60 without a fan.

Yeah...for the $$ I completely agree.

But I HAVE BOTH already and was trying to decide which one to put in what PC.

One will be a Duron 600 @ 1050 (2.2v)

The other will be a Athlon 1.4 @ at least 1.6 with almost no raise in voltage.

You're not going to find a definate answer but they should be extremely similar so it doesn't really matter. They both cool really well. I believe one site said the swiftech was better by 1C under load with massive delta fans(I think). Considering it's more expensive aswell I would just guess that the swiftech is the better of the two. But again it doesn't matter.

Man I would say that since you have them both, slap one on and test it for a few days, then put the other on and test that. I would do the Alpha second though that way in case you like that better you dont have to install that puppy twice. Let us know your findings.
