What is the difference between the MCP655 & MCP655-B pumps?

I am considering a quieter pump for my Q9650 loop. I think why this MCP 355 is audibly noticeable is because of the case so I will be doing some more creative thinking on my loop 😀

655 is adjustable in speed from 1-5, the -B is locked to a single speed somewhere around setting 4 of the regular 655.

EDIT, I have one of each and if you mount them well, either is inaudible from outside of my case.

Also, I was wondering if i could us a fan speed controller to adjust the speed on the MCP 355 pump to make it a little more quiet. I think I have a few old fan speed controllers laying around; not sure if they are the right volt though.
 
The problem with running that pump on a fan controller will be amps, not volts. Most fan controllers don't have a lot of amperage head room because typical fans don't pull many amps. There are some fan controllers that can handle it, you'll just have to check the specs on the controllers to see what they are. While you're looking at those specs, be sure to check if the rated amps are for the whole unit or per channel.

The MCP355 is spec'ed to run @ 12V but can run very safely any where between 8 to 13.2 volts (typical start up at around 9V). In that range it will pull about 1-2 amps, with about 1.2- 1.5 amps typically @ 12V.

I think the MCP-350 is quieter than the 355.
 
Yeah, I'm looking ahead to what I might possibly do. In the mean time I'm giving the 355 a chance to see if it will quiet down. I know. I'm just real sensitive to sound and to be honest, the Raptor is WAY more louder than when it was in my PC A-20 case so I know half of the problem is my case; V1100b
 
Use a controller designed for a pump if you want to dial it in. The current draw at startup may damage a fan controller. Though the cost of a controller would likely be the cost of another pump.
