Swiftech MC462 cooler review!

I think that the basic concept of that heatsink is a sign of things to come, with a large size cooler that attaches not with the chintzy plastic nubs but rather with the mounting holes AMD spec'd around the socket. That part is good.

Bad points... it weighs a frickin ton. It also has poorly implemented fin design, with huge (relatively at 1/4" thick) polished press fit pins. They could of done it better, with more and smaller fins, possibly with anodizing to create greater surface area.

So, overall a cool heatsink, but it needs some improvement before it lives up to its potential.

I think some of the good points were designed to match some of the bad points - For example, it does weigh a ton, but it's mounting system is such that you really can't crush your core and it's on there solid as a rock - No need to worry about breaking of Mobo logs when you mount it.

Now, if someone would just start reviewing it against the Glaciator and some of the other new copper sinks.. I'm ready to buy one, just want to see what's the best!

What is so bad about the weight of the 462-A? That "frickin ton" is supported by the holes around the socket, NOT the Socket lugs itself. How is it they "could have done it better"? The fins aren't making surface area. Not sure where that came from?

The Rev1 units have a few minor (mainly cosmetic) changes, but the fact remains: MC462-A is *THE* most powerful air cooler out there, period. If "they could have done it better", I'm wondering why about 70 other Socket A coolers aren't outperforming it.
