Apparantly the scene you're reffering to wasn't in the script at first. The story goes that Harrison Ford was all sick and feverish that day, and thought he could do the upcoming fight scene. But when it came time to do it he was far too weary, so he pulls out his prop gun, says "bang!" and asks for a cut. Either Lucas or Spielberg thought that was hilarious and kept it in.

You can tell he was sick for that day of shooting in the movie. Even under all that makeup he looks pale and sweaty.
