Also, for Thanksgiving two years ago I was studying abroad in China and managed to make a sweet potato casserole using sweet potatoes bought from a street vendor. Got like half a dozen of them, mashed them together with butter and brown sugar from the local supermarket, and made a topping out of butter and brown sugar with pecans set in it.

Pretty simple recipe with few ingredients, but the results were GODLY. I was amazed at what I was able to make in a country where many standard grocery items aren't available.

Shit, thats pretty much the same recipe we make every thanksgiving here in the states. It doesn't have to be complicated to be good. Its pretty much my favorite dish at thanksgiving. I call it the pre-dessert. I tend to have it just after the main course/sides and before pie. God I love thanksgiving.

I substitute sweet potatoes for regular potatoes as much as I can. They are much healthier for you. People are pleasantly surprised by sweet potatoes in a savory dish like a roast.

When I was younger, my parents used to give me orange colored veges, sometimes from the carrot family, sometimes from a squash family, and maybe even the occasional canned yam but however they were prepared I hated 'em. Can't say they ever actually made a baked sweet potato, ever.

Fast forward until I moved away from home, and got a job, and started eating lunch, occasionally at Roadhouse. I decided one day I would give one a try. Well, that was quite the turning point. I don't know WTF my family did to f-ck up vege's all those years but I was then hooked.

Interestingly, when I later took my GF, now wife, to said restaurant she also had the same experience. She didn't like 'em but gave it a try and her opinion changed. So, for those of you who do not like sweet potato's perhaps you've been getting a bad sample. If not, well, no big deal--but seriously, if you've never experienced a regular-ol baked sweet potato w/ butter, brown sugar, and perhaps a little cinnamon, well, give it a go. You might be surprised.
