material under a microscope is a little too general (i was hoping for "metal under microscope), but you're the closest :p

the first picture is as-received brass, etched and put under an optical microscope

the second picture is the same brass after a 40% reduction in thickness by rolling, and subsequent recrystallization after about 12 minutes at 400C :)

yea I was thinking either metal or some type of rock/mineral.
macro photography is definitely something I want to get into more, if I can ever afford the quality lenses.

on an interesting note, highly deformed aluminum will recrystallize at room temperature :)

not sure about the camera/microscope.

i can tell you that we did grinding with 320, 400, 800, 1200, and 2400grit SiC followed by a 3um and 1um diamond polish though :p

what are your two pics of? they look good :)
