Sweet new Latitude XT

Dell finally confirmed that they are bringing out a Tablet PC.
Looks very sweet ... what I consider the dream tablet pc if the internal specs are right.

Multitouch screen,
touchpad,
outdoor screen,
no internal optical drive,
probably santa rosa with the newest C2D ULV (sadly only 2GHz?)
Let's hope they support at least 4GB max RAM

Since they said it is based on the D420 it should also support an SD Card slot, firewire, ...

The biggest question: which pen technology do they use? Wacom (please, please, please, ...)?

Now if only this baby was available now ... I wouldn't mind dropping $2000 for it.

I see no optical drive becoming a burden quickly for end users

How often do you really use that optical drive? Only when you are at home/at the office and usually only when loading new software.

And when you have to carry a laptop or a tablet you will very quickly appreciate the .5 lbs less weight and the 30-60 minutes extra battery (might be even more [2 hours?] if you look at the Lenovo x60 series and compare them with other laptops/tablets with optical drives).

I have not touched my external optical drive for 3 months ... if you don't count OS re-installs probably closer to 2 years.

With high speed internet now readily available, optical drives are needed much less. A flash drive+internet should cover most uses. Most software is now available as online downloads, so there's not much need for cd/dvds.

Where did you get this from?
Would make sense to bring it out before school starts again ...

The only rumor I heard a while, while back was Oct.

yeah I agree. My DVD burner on my MBP only gets used when I want to make DVD's to give to my family. That doesn't happen all that much, and when it does, I'm usually at my desk where I could easily have an external enclosure. I'd gladly give up that space to either reduce weight (although the 5.5lbs is hardly taxing my manly physique 😉 ) or I wouldn't mind another HD, a la the MCE OptiBay.
