First of all my brand new PS3 just came. I bought it on ebay from this guy who sold it to me for $494 shipped. It's the 60GB version. I'm excited and the PS3 is updating right now.

I ordered this system at the same time I ordered my HDTV (26" Magnavox LCD supports 720p, etc). I'm currently running it through component (not composite) on my TV. I was wondering how big of a difference the graphics will be once I start playing in 720p. Any input?

Also, do these controllers have to be plugged in? Or can I unplug them once the game starts?

What res are you playing at now ? Component should be able to do 720P no problem, or are you asking if there is a difference between this and digital (HDMI) ?

The controllers do not need to be plugged in at all, except to charge the batteries. You can turn the system on/off using the clear button in the middle.

You can go to playstation.com for an online copy of the PS3 manual.

The controllers have rechargeable batteries in them, but they are wireless once charged. You do need to plug one in to finish updating the firmware as a safety feature.

FYI, there are a bunch of downloadable demos for games like Armored Core 4 and Ninja Gaiden so you can try before you buy or rent (gamefly.com).

If you don't have netflix, now is a good time to get it -- they carry a couple of hundred movies on blu-ray.

No no I mean I'm just plugged into component...my TV is just a standard display CRT with the component input. Not HD. :)

You can also charge your controllers on PC/laptop USB ports. I haven't tried the 360 yet, but it probably works there too :)

That means your display can handle 480p max. You'll notice a small difference over composite.

The difference between gaming@480i on a 36" JVC SD and my 57" HDTV@720p is dramatic, so you should be stoked when you make the switch. I haven't done it with the PS3 since mine is only a few days old too, but the 360 is a close enough approximation.

About the six axis, if the battery does go at some point, a replacement can be had for $10+shipping, or a new controller for $30 or so. That is the one thing I don't like about the PS3 so far, Sony should have let me use rechargeable AA just like the 360.

Nice! But even at the normal discounted price of $499, I would have bought it at a retail store instead.

Yeah my only guess is either he didn't know of the price drop or everyone around him was out of stock. Otherwise it wasn't a wise choice to give near $500 for a system off ebay.

I was very unaware of this...I was under the impression that all console systems were factory priced and all retailers had to sell them for $499...
