2 rigs, Asus V7700 in 2nd rig dies. Buy a Gainward Ti500 Golden Sample to replace Elsa Ultra in first rig and put Elsa in 2nd rig. Elsa dosen't want to uninstall/remove. Finally get it out, shut down and install Gainward. Reboot, registry is gone. Rebuild registry in DOS, reboot, all VxD drivers are gone and machine is toast. Tried to reinstall Windows 98SE on top of itself (I know), it wouldn't install. Format C/D, Fdisk, partition and reinstall OS. Good to go. Install AMD miniport drivers, mobo drivers, restart. Install Nvidia 23.11, restart, registry gone. Reinstall everything (monitor, printer and video card, at this point), restart install Gainward drivers, restart, registry gone. Reinstall afore mentioned items, install Gainward and here I am, afraid to do anything else. Device manager shows a GeForce3, all my PCI (motherboard) drivers are yet to be installed (again) and I am frustrated/tired.

Shut it down last night and went to bed. Fire it up this morning and registry is gone, restore it, reboot, all VxD's are gone. Format, reinstall OS, so far so good but I am holding my breath.

Oldsmobaot:

The best piece of software you can ever buy:

Power Quests DriveImage or
Norton Ghost

In your case it could have saved you lots of problems.
When all goes awry during new upgrade, simply reload the last saved image. Saves you stress, and time.

Highly recommended. One of my best buys, EVER!

I didn't expect anything to go bad but that's good advice. I talked to gainward's tech support, they admitted to problems with their drivers and said the card was bad. It's on it's way back to newegg.

*gun cocking*

BOOM

There ya go, feel better?

I know what it's like to get your computer screwed up over and over. Try formatting and reinstalling Windows 7 times, only to find out that it was bad ram causing the problem.

Thanks for all the "shots". :) Turns out Gainward, Newegg and I were all wrong. I got the replacement card today and I have the same problem. Right now I am in 16 bit color @ 640 X 480. Searching amdmb.com, I see that it might be a promise controller problem. Now, if I just knew what to do about it. Search, searching............

Where can I find a run down of some of these known problems. I'm running 21.87(everything is peachy) right now because 23.11 seems a bit buggy. I'd like to see what problems other people are expierencing. thanks in advance
