Can't you tether via Wifi? That should use less power than BT. I can tether with wifi on my phone.
???

I might as well just connect my laptop to wi-fi then.
Maybe but if there's no available wifi connection? Why use BT when wifi can do the trick? Wifi uses less power.
Uh what is the phone connecting to then? Here's the setup.

Laptop -(Bluetooth)-> BB Pearl -(Cell Signal)-> Internet
There's an app for windows mobile that make a wifi enabled smart phone act as a wireless router. Not sure if an app exists for the blackberry.
I don't think my BB Pearl has wi-fi capability anyways.

What I really want is to be able to tether a iPhone 3G or 3GS to the BB Pearl.

As in, share the BB Pearl's data connection with the iPhone? I don't think it's possible, I tried it with my touch 2g. At least with the touch, the BT stack restricts you to pairing audio devices or the Nike thing.

It's probably a software limitation, though, since the thing is basically a handheld computer given its OS. I hope a solution pops up, likely for jailbroken devices.

Pretty cool. Now if I can get iPod Touch or iPhone to do the same thing.
You can.

jailbreak
install cydia
install pdanet
browse at 3G speeds (like I am doing now)
I assume this is true for iPod Touch as well? Reason why I want iPhone 3G/GS is for the GPS capability.

BT radio is actually lower power than WiFi. Some phones can act as WiFi access points, though, which is obviously nice for some things (for example, if you want to tether multiple devices simultaneously).

I tether through Alltel (now Verizon I guess) and it's a steal. $10/mo and it's truly unlimited (I use about 30GB/mo usually).

Well, no. The touch doesnt have a 3G connection to share

I can setup a bluetooth PAN on my XV6900 and share my 3g internet to multiple devices as well.

No, no. I think you misunderstood. I want the iPod/iPhone to use the connection of the BB Pearl to get to the Internet.

The phone connects via cell signal.

Laptop - (Wifi) -> N82 - (Cell signal) -> Internet

It's the same but replace BT with Wifi. Remember, 802.11 is not the same as WCDMA :p

Wait, your phone has Wifi right? I'm not that familiar with BBs, but this is very possible with WinMo and S60 phones because that's where most of my experience is. I did read iPhones can do this too with some Cydia apps.

As for the guy saying BT uses less power, BT uses less power when not active I believe. When it is active, it will drain your phone pretty badly. So will Wifi, but from what I have read, Wifi tethering uses less power.

The BB Pearl doesn't have Wifi, but I found some videos of people doing exactly this with a Palm Pre, although, I'm holding off to see what the HTC Hero brings to the table. This would work better for what I want to do. Thanks for the suggestion.
