Is that AT&T? Do you have to buy a tethering plan?Originally posted by: FetusCakeMix
Since I've just moved, and won't have internet til next week, I've had to do the same thing with my Bold for the last few days. It's actually not too bad for just light web browsing.
Luckily I'm at work most of the time, where I have net access.
The BB Pearl and laptop (Vista 32-bit) are paired up via Bluetooth.Originally posted by: Sawyer
How exactly does that work?
I'm on the Sprint Family SERO plan.Originally posted by: EKKC
have fun getting slapped with a hefty bill for tethering without the tether plan or an unexpected termination of service.
seriously. i'm not trying to be an a-hole. check the fine print on your carriers' tether policy
unless you use sprint. i used to be on sprint and tether was free. and yes tether via bluetooth was hella sweet

Nope, T-Mobile. I have an AT&T branded Bold that has been unlocked and debranded. And no, on T-Mobile, there's no fee for tethering the phone as a modem.Originally posted by: her209

Can't you tether via Wifi? That should use less power than BT. I can tether with wifi on my phone.

I've been told by numerous parties that using wi-fi or bluetooth to tether on Verizon phones, notably Windows Mobile with a few software apps or tricks, can net you full EV-DO tethered access without the tethering charge from Verizon. Been tempted to set that up with my laptop, but... just really haven't had that need. Verizon does charge a minimum of $30 for smart phone data plans, which is unlimited, and the only difference is no Exchange email push services.

I might as well just connect my laptop to wi-fi then.
It was only for experimental purposes. I have wi-fi here but wanted to see if it could be done.Originally posted by: sjwaste
SERO doesn't cover tethering. You're supposed to pay extra for that. However, it's generally said that Sprint doesn't ask unless you're burning a LOT of data.Originally posted by: her209

Also, that throughput kind of sucks. Try tethering with a cable and see if your speeds improve. I've used Sprint for tethering in the past and have gotten closer to 768k down. It was like really, really laggy DSL.

Maybe but if there's no available wifi connection? Why use BT when wifi can do the trick? Wifi uses less power.Originally posted by: her209

Unlimited data FTW!
Speed test says I am getting 0.33Mbps down/ 0.11Mbps up. Not bad for AT forums and text stuff. Not so good on Hulu content.
Pretty cool. Now if I can get iPod Touch or iPhone to do the same thing.
