I have one of these cameras. It's a very good, very reliable camera. Build quality is great. It's the kind of camera that if you take care of, it can last you a lifetime. Operation isn't too hard if you're familiar with manual SLR cameras, there's nothing unusual about it.

Personally, I'd much rather use an AE-1 over a new point and shoot film camera. If you take any amount of film pictures and don't own any other SLRs, I'd keep it and learn how to use it.

It's fully manual, there's really nothing to it. The film advance is a thumb lever on the left side, the shutter button is on the right side. One dial has numbers - that's the shutter speed. A is for Automatic the camera picks for you. There is another dial that you use to choose Full Auto (Forget what symbol...big A?), Aperture Priority (Av), Shutter priority (Tv), or fully manual (M).

If using Tv or Full Auto, set the aperture ring on the lens to "A"

It's breech/bayonnet mount lens, so there is a release button, and the lens turns 1/4 turn and comes off.
The little slide to the right of the lens (with the lens facing you) closes the aperture so that you can gauge depth of field.

Push the shutter button 1/2way to activate the light meter which is displayed in the viewfinder.

That's about it. No-frills, not much to break, maybe that's why they were so solid 🙂

That's a great camera. It was my first camera and the one I learned photography on. Is it an AE-1 or an AE-1 Program?

Nice find!

They seem to be going for between $100 and $150 on ebay. I know that doesn't really answer the question about worth, but it's a starting point. My brother has one of these, and it is a wonderful camera. I'd like to get my hands on one someday. I've got a different canon slr that I really like, but the AE-1 is pretty much bulletproof. Great find.
