Man I thought the movie was excruciatingly bad. One of the worse rentals I've gotten from netflix.

I watched 5 minutes of it on an airplane and couldn't take anymore.

Watched Cloverfield instead.

And worst taste award goes to :p

Sweeney Todd is fantastic. Then again, I believe Sondheim is one of the greatest geniuses of our generation, and I'm open to all forms of entertainment before I judge them, musical or not.
Yeah it was on a recommendation like yours that convinced me to rent it. I should have known better.

I absolutely loved this movie. It felt very refreshing from the usual Hollywood stuff and I was entertained the entire time.

yes it has singing
no Depp isn't "out of the closet" as you say
its a good movie
I don't see how anything else is relevant

It's not your money paying for the PPV so only my opinion is relevant. Yours is worthless.
If there is singing in the movie, I don't want to see it.
:p

i hate musicals, but i loved the movie. its worth sitting thru IMO.

Is based on a musical, is there singing in it?

I think you know

Actually, no. I wanted to make sure before I wasted some PPV money on it.
So, is Depp out of the closet now?

The movie offsets its gayness by having the most plentiful and graphic throat slittings I have ever seen.

Coming from someone who liked Moulin Rouge and Chicago, I did not like this musical.

For a dark offbeat art film it's OK, I just had the wrong expectations the first time I watched it because I knew nothing about it.

The 17th century wardrobe and "early leprosy" style makeup was a little over the top but distinctly Burton, too much like Corpse bride.

I was disappointed in the storyline, it played like a bad broadway musical. No attempt at character buildup or subplots, they just filled in the blanks with more throat slashing. I love some of Tim Burtons work and most of Depps work, but this one was about as tasty as one of Mrs Lovette's meat pies

I loved the acting, the humor, the story, and the environments and special effects were top notch...

The music was absolutely terrible, bad enough to ruin the movie for me.

"the worst pies in london!" are you serious? "i feel you johanna" for 8 solid minutes sucked too. It seems a lot of the songs were drug out longer just to pay homage to the musical when they couldve just sang a few lines and moved on with the movie.

It's kinda sad. I liked the movie, but I hated the musical aspects. It was like 6/10. If they just made it a normal movie without the singing, it would have easily been a 9/10 or a 10/10. If I wanted to see the musical version I'd see it live!

I generally like Tim Burton movies, so I really wanted to like this film. Sadly, it didn't hold my interest when I rented it. Sondheim just doesn't do it for me. The art direction and cinematography was very good though, as I expected.

I hate musicals. but i thought this movie was great. Mostly i find the musical format destroys suspension of disbelief or is just too cheesy to be taken seriously. but in this case, with the macabre subject matter, it was done very tongue in cheek.
I've added it to the list of only 5 musicals that i have ever liked.

Johnny Depp's singing voice doesn't do the movie justice IMO. But at least he can act.

i've also seen a 2001 dvd version that was a live performance... sweeney todd in concert, filmed in san fran city opera house.
that was pretty good as well, professional singers that time. Doogie houser played the little boy lol:) its on netflix.

the angela lansbury version is a bit crap.

I saw it performed at WSU when I was there, and it was awesome. I thought the movie did it great justice - as only Tim Burton would do. Gorgeous, dark movie.

I suppose this thread is a bit old but I just caught this movie on TV recently. Though I didn't like it at first, as I usually hate gloomy/sad movies (I don't want to be bummed out after seeing a movie, I want to be uplifted :p). But the more I think about it the more I like it. Still I didn't love it, but it was pretty good. Gotta like all the actors...even Borat was in there. The song 'Johanna' is also pretty nice. Probably took it to seriously the first time. They're baking people into the pies...it can't be too serious of a movie I guess.

I agree. I enjoy musicals, but I really didn't think the music was very good.
