What I did not expect to see was GK110 to come out a full year later as a refresh. That was unexpected. I expected those cards would have been out sooner.

TSMC was still supply limited with 28nm at this point 2012. nVidia shipped the first 23k GK110 chips in july but they needed to wait until Q4 2012 for TSMC to bring up another 28nm plant.

And yet the more expensive the chips are the less they sell. I bet there were several 100,000 GK104/106/107 sold by summer/fall 2012. Of course you need more wafers for a larger GPU, but I'm absolutely sure that the sales ratio between GK110 and GK104 is way larger than the die size ratio of those two.
