SweClockers test lab discovered that Asus MG279Q can not deliver 144 Hz, which causes the component giant to recall the highly anticipated gaming monitor. The screen only shows five of six frames (i.e. "frame-skipping") which means that in practice it stops at 120 Hz - even when it is set to 144 Hz.

– What happens at 144 Hz is that Asus MG279Q simply skips every sixth frame. It is most visible in smooth motion at a constant speed and creates hiccups. I noticed that something was not right simply by moving a window, says SweClockers monitor expert Thomas Ytterberg.

After SweClockers discovery Asus decides to recall all MG279Q from the sales channel. According to Asus Nordics marketing director Marcus Hultin, all customers can return the screen as of early next week by contacting the Asus warranty service

This problem is also confirmed by the Asus engineers, who announces that the problem should be corrected in a new version of the firmware. Since the software can not be updated without specialized equipment all screens must first be returned to the factory. Deliveries are expected to start again in three to four weeks.

Well, I don't know how it got past their own play testing, but at least they are proactive with their response. Hopefully their customers will get well taken care of.

They could have spun it as a power saving feature. /sarc 😉
 
Ironic because it was listed as 120hz some places. I only saw 120hz when I listed its 35-90hz Freesync range in the Freesync thread.
 
Guess it will reach the US in mid-June? Originally slated for a late May release in North America, but with these delays more likely to be June. Oh well, the release might now coincide with the new R9 300 series from AMD.
 
I've been hoping for dodgy monitor makers to be shamed for a while.

The panels themselves have ratings and there's only so much you can do to fudge that.
 
Asus makes some really great stuff and they do some really crappy things sometimes with their products. Glad they're owning up to it at least (assuming refunds/RMA's actually happen).

Would they have done so without a reviewer catching the problem?

Certainly they have a QA team right?
 
Nvidias fault. Should issue driver update to fix the issue and improve relations with companies like asus.
 
Question to monitor manufacturers: why not implement way to manually able to update firmware? Wouldn't this be more practical for everybody?
