Yes nice post Glen. I also found it very interesting. From what I can see, I agree with flyermax and SaltBoy's interpretations. I want to read The Silmarillion now.

It is impossible to read.

I can barely get through it on audio.
PM me if you want the audi in mp3 format.
Seriously... I tried reading that book in 6th grade because I had read the hobbit & the LOTR books...
I gave up on that book. What a waste of time and horrible writing.

Wow I guess I don't want to read it then. I'm reading The Hobbit now and it's pretty good....

As if the bible meant anything more than a scrap of allegories by the few literate scribes in an era of mass ignorance.

Nice bit with the various translations.

Can we get an original reading, though? ie, can you get us an accurate translation from the Torah, so we can see how that stacks up against the biblical ones?

Are you saying it is worse or any different than the Kalvala, Gilgamesh, Bellerophon, Anansi tales, Angus Og, Savitri, Hedda, or what are you saying?

Why teh hell do you have to take it as organized religion?
If were were discussing the meanign of the Zulu, Persian, Japanese, or Pawnee Morality tales, would you be so opposed?

Didn't Tolkien specifically say that LotR was not written as a Christian allegory?

Edit: Taken from here
"In his last interview in 1971, Tolkien plainly stated that he did not intend The Lord of the Rings as a Christian allegory and that Christ is not depicted in his fantasy novels. When asked about the efforts of the trilogy?s hero, Frodo, to struggle on and destroy the ring, Tolkien said, "But that seems I suppose more like an allegory of the human race. I?ve always been impressed that we?re here surviving because of the indomitable courage of quite small people against impossible odds: jungles, volcanoes, wild beasts... they struggle on, almost blindly in a way" (Interview by Dennis Gerrolt; it was first broadcast in January 1971 on BBC Radio 4 program "Now Read On?"). That doesn?t sound like the gospel to me. When Gerrolt asked Tolkien, "Is the book to be considered as an allegory?" the author replied, "No. I dislike allegory whenever I smell it."

Thus, the author of The Lord of the Rings denied the very thing that some Christians today are claiming, that these fantasies are an allegory of Christ?s victory over the devil. "

Yes.
But, you would have to be blind not to see the parallels.
The story of Morgoth and Satan are identical.
The themes are the same.
For example there is but one creator, Eru, and all other creators are bad. Example: Suroman, Sauron, Morgoth, Dwarves.

1. I am suggesting saying, "Jesus Christ!" when you stub your toe is not breaking the 3rd commandment.

2. I am suggesting saying, "Jesus Christ!" when you stub your toe is maybe going against Matthew 5: 33-37.

3. I am suggesting that when you go on TV asking for money in the name of God, you are breaking the 3rd commandment.

1. I think the utterance of the Lord's name at a time like that IS breaking the 3rd Commandment.
2. see 1. above
3. I think that is true SOME of the time. There are televangelist with fine upstanding ministries that are absolutely Biblical in asking for donations.
(See 1Timothy 5:17,18)

That's my opinion of the interpretations of these passages. Examples 1 and 2 are outbursts because of anger, using the name of the lord as a swear word. I'd agree with #3 if the evangelist is only doing it for the sole reason of personal gain. If an evangelist is spreading the word of god, and is asking for donations to further his work in preaching, then I have no problem with an evangelist asking for money. Again, that's my opinion :)
