Decided to play the game again, I never finished it the first time, I came close but my damn saved game somehow magically vanished. And starting over was hell.

on the hotel one now, I almost beat the damn level but as I blew open the door to the last room I heard a terrorist off around the corner yelling at a hostage to "shut the hell up!" of course he heard me blow open the door. before I could get to them *pop pop pop* hostage dead. I opti-wanded the room but there was nobody in sight so I went ahead and C4'd the door, opps :)

MISSION FAILED.

I did so good I decided to re-try the level and beat it this time, only instead of beating it, I got killed in about the first 30 seconds by a chump who yelled "score!" after he smoked my a$$.

If I'm not dying from a psycho baddie coming out of nowhere and blasting me. I'm loosing a mission because I shot too many terrorists before they pointed the gun at me. If I wait for them to point, there's a good chance my ass is history.

This is really the one of most frustrating game, but I can't stop playing it.

is it harder than swat 3? do you try and do non-lethal takedowns on all the baddies? i tried to do swat 3 without killing anyone...it's very hard and I don't remember if I succeeded

swat is really hard. I dont know why more people dont play it. it looks good and is very challenging and its lots of fun to coop in. doing non lethal is very difficult. i have yet to complete the game as i always get to some point and either reformat or cant get past those crazy bad guys who always waste me.

Swat 3 was maybe harder, only because your teams AI is a bit better in 4. I try non-lethal but the baddies are sometimes so quick to shoot you can't get much. I use a lot of CS gas/Flashbangs and if I can pepper spray them. The problem with that is you run out of CS Gas and stuff quick, and if you equip yourself with like the bean bag shooting shotgun you loose your main gun.

Tasering people is fun as hell, I had to taser a hostage because they wouldn't get down on the ground to be cuffed up.

Same as swat 3 the missions are dynamic, you'll have the same objectives but it always plays out different, this means no playing it 50 times to memorize what you need to do. This makes it more interesting, and fun but also more difficult because you can't really gauge a baddie who one time will put down the gun just hearing the door open, and the next time he will see you + your whole squad yelling to get on the floor and he decides to try and take you all out.

I hope they make a Swat 5, they probably will even though I haven't heard anything about it

If you need to make the game easier, use CS gas. Its not realistic, since CS gas doesn't fill a room that quickly, but it does make the game easier if you're having problems.

Try to be systematic and clear an area only once, and secure alternate entries with door wedges.

It is definately challenging... I loved it. I tried not to kill anybody, but I don't think I ever got through the nightclub without killing somebody.

The game is easier when you equip the beanbag shotgun or cs paintball gun as your primary, but this is not realistic at all. No swat officer would ever go in a tactical situation without a primary gun. It's just stupid.

So I like to go in with a mp5 and just cap them if they try to shoot me. This is really hard to do, so I play this game very sporadically. Basically, play a couple of times through and then get frustrated and play BF2 and take my anger on real players.

My biggest gripe with this game is how the friendly AI teammates will stop following you once they meet a suspect or hostage that is uncooperative. I like to flash the room and then rush it with 5 men, but I always end up rushing in alone because 1 suspect or hostie doesn't give up and my men are still chilling by the doorway outside of the room.

It is really easy if you just use non-lethal cause it turns into just another shooter. Not realistic as all, and you do get screwed. I tried doing that for the first few levels. It went ok, until I started getting suspects with heavy body armour and gas masks. Then I peppered them until I was out of ammo and they still shot me. If you play properly with real guns, the game becomes 10x harder and 1000x funner. Even more satisfying dropping those mofos who decide to point their gun at you...

It's a fun game but the lack of realism just killed it for me about halfway in. The earlier missions where you're searching a house for 1 - 2 psychos are extremely fun and suspenseful... and fairly realistic in the equipment/guns that would be available to said psycho.

Some of the missions are just retarded. Ok, there's a group of guys robbing a jewelry store... 45 guys with kevlar armor, gas masks, and enough automatic weapons to topple a small country. I guess it adds more action to the game to have an unrealistic amount of baddies, but it was more comical than anything to me. Hell, it only took about 10 Germans to take over the tower in Die Hard...

lol @ Diehard reference.

Kind of agree with you on the realism thing. A lot of times, I just went 'why the hell can't I shoot?'. Like in the hospital; they already murdered a bunch of innocent people, are heavily armed and equiped with armour. Tell me again why I can't go in shooting? It was great that you were suppose to arrest people, but it just doesn't make sense for a lot of the missions to be taken care of by the book. At times, I just wished that Rainbow was there...

Yup. Ding, would've just went trigger happy.

I think this game should've been split between 2 types of missions.

1. You go in with the intent to kill (shoot to kill) because you've given the suspects to many chances to surrender and they've already killed too many innocent hosties. Basically, the suspects already have already plainly said that they will not give up. The only objective is to save the hosties.

2. You're serving up an arrest warrant. (the first level and second level are perfect examples) I would not expect SWAT officers to go in guns blazing on these types of missions.

Does anyone know of any mods that make this game more enojoyable/more realistic?

I really just want to go in the missions rainbow style and shoot up anyone that's holding a gun and not get penalized.

Finally beat it yesterday! Went and picked up The Stetchkov Syndicate which is the expansion pack.

has some great new weapons, the tear gas grenade launcher is crazy. the enemy AI seems a bit tweeked, it's still frustrating as hell because you really can't adapt you just have to be real careful. your team AI is still good, but it's missing some things. My big grevience is if I have them gas a room they still seem to open the door and just sort of drop the CS in instead of throwing it in and getting the room good.
I don't remember seeing real world ad's in Swat 4, this one I saw an ad for Carl Jr's Pineapple burger which just came out, maybe this came in the 1.1 patch? I never patched Swat 4 so I don't know. But it fits in as the locations seem real so the ad's made sense.
Level design is kick a$$, so many damn places for the baddies to hide, and the fact every time you play it's random where they'll be. It makes it almost impossible to really master a level. I'm 4 missions into the game and so far it's really a good expansion. One thing I found cool, a terrorist got on the ground and said "I give up" but then he grabbed his AK and started to fire. I don't remember that ever happening in Swat 4. Oh and they added a punch command, you can punch the idiot people who don't want to cooperate, it's probably more fun to pepper spray them but this is quick and easy.
the new taser gun is BAAAAAAD! it shoots multiple hooks out and can take down more then 1 person. The night vision goggles are great too. I'm about to go play some more. Sorry I waited this long to pick this sucker up.

Good to hear you're satisfied.

The 'punch' is the BEST thing in the expansion. I can't even count the number of times I had to reload cause I gassed/stung a ring full of guys, but one or two still wouldn't comply, and I lost points for shooting them. In the expansion, just punched 'em into submission:).

haha yeah I found myself accidentally punching people when I was meaning to turn my flashlight off, seems like a pretty wimpy punch to make a Terrorist give up though. a kick or stomp would have been a nice addition too.
