Swapping to an Athlon 64 combo tomorrow!

Hey guys,
I know this is sort of a newbie question but I am going to be replacing my Nforce2 setup with an A64 3000+ combo tomorrow and I don't want to format my HD. I am running WinXP SP2 and I have noticed that some people say that a repair may be needed. Doing a repair will be no big deal I'm just unsure if I shoud go in and uninstall anything in device manager before the swap? The last time I did a mobo swap I was running Win2k and I kept getting a stop 07b code (inaccessible boot device) and I'd rather not relive that experience. Any thoughts would be great.

Quoted for reiteration.

When you change motherboards, it's best to reinstall windows. Otherwise, you're asking for trouble. And I don't mean your normal, run of the mill trouble. I'm talking a Costco two-pack.

I strongly really definitely without doubt DO a fresh install. If you don't want to lose the stuff in there, and you have no means to back it up, pick up a cheap hd and use the new as the master and the old as the slave.

Thanks for all those who replied. I have a NEC 3520 that would be perfect for backups, I'm just lazy:D. I have had this install running for a few years and have a ton of stuff for school and such. I am going to give it a try and then just reinstall XP on my new HD when it arrives.

If you want to go ahead and try it anyway, back up all your important data and make sure that the nVidia platform drivers (if you installed them) are the latest version, or at least one that supports the new platform (nForce3 I assume). If the new platform is not nForce3 then uninstall nVidia drivers before the swap.

It may work, but even then it may cause a bunch of problems and a considerable performance hit.
