Swapping the CPU question.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how stupid would it be to sell an i7-6700k and buy an i5-7600k and pocket the difference?

Depends on the games, and the accompanying GPU.

For MOST things you probably wont notice the difference.

It depends on how much you can get for your 6700k. The i5-7600k is $240, so by the time you eat the Paypal and/or Ebay fees (and shipping costs), you probably won't pocket that much.

I say just keep the 6700k and enjoy it for many more years.

Another option would be: to keep the 6700K CPU and upgrade only the motherboard to a Z270 chipset board.
Not a whole lot of difference between a Z170 vs. Z270 board, unless you wanted a newer Z270 board that includes the Realtek ALC1220 audio chip, for example.

It's like the old Clint Eastwood script-line about "A man's gotta know his limitations."

All of us here at these forums are bitten by what CorkyG called "Techno-Lust." It's just so early still in the Skylake life-cycle, and the jump to Kaby Lake is a half-generation and only buys you the nominal benchmark overclock to 5.0 Ghz. Maybe.

I can say that I've been tempted to "plan" and do it, but it really doesn't seem to make sense. Now . . . if you planned to sell it and replace with the Kaby, it's still extra trouble. And . . . for what, really?

And just an afterthought, considering that I bought my chip from Silicon Lottery and paid extra for the binning and re-lidding. Assume that the OP didn't go through all that. Where did his Skylake fall in the chip lottery, and how lucky might he get with a new Kaby? Risk is also a cost-factor.

Well... I did make a move. The i7-6700k I got on sale for 259.99. I sold it for 280, and picked up the 7700k at Microcenter for 299. Other than me having to go to the store, it was pretty much free to go from the 6700k to the 7700k. Not a bad deal.
