I'm considering swapping out an optical drive in a laptop for a second SATA drive. Will the SATA controller being used for the optical drive be able to handle the same type of I/O that I would expect from a 7200RPM HDD or an SSD? I know that it is SATA, but I've had issues before when trying to put a DVD drive on a SATA I controller that was intended for an HDD. I'm looking at the following chipsets:

Mobile HM55 Express
HM55 Express
HM65 Express

My Sager NP8130 (HM65 chipset) has a swapped optical to HDD. Sager attaches the optical to port 2 (Sata II). Main drive is on port 0 (Sata III). Performance is excellent.
