I got an iPhone 2G from a friend and I was wondering if it would be possible to take my SIM card from my Sony W580i and put it into the iPhone 2G and just use it. Would that work?

If it's an ATT sim card, yes. You'd have to look into whether it has a compatible data plan, but it'll make traditional phone calls.

No need to activate, if you want to use data, call ATT & add a data plan.

The advantage will be that you're not locked into a 2 year contract

If you do not want to pay for the data plan, I would recommend completely blocking data from your account. The iPhone has a habit of transferring data (albeit in small amounts) from time to time and I absolutely would not want to pay the highway robbery a la carte rates. You may be able to add a $15/month MediaMAX plan for unlimited data if you want.

And also, not doubting Pliablemoose since I've never tried another SIM in my iPhone, but whenever I do a firmware update or restore, it always says "iPhone Activated" when it is finished loading the firmware. Just an FYI, I don't know any contractual implications of this message, it may just be checking the validity of the SIM. My iPhone is a 2G still locked to AT&T, unlocked devices may behave differently.
