Swapping out mobo's, will XP allow it?

A guy I know wants to swap out old mobo w/ new one. I say XP can do it, but you may need to do a Windows XP repair. Others say that is not so, and it won't even boot.

Who is right?

You can get away with it if you know what you are doing. There is a thread around here somewhere about it. Let me look around and see if I can dig it up.

Basically, you are going to delete XP's hardware definitions and make it redo the hardware detection.

In most cases, just switching the IDE controller to standard dual channel, and voila.
As far as activation, the first major change it won't care about--you'll have to do a couple more. Also, it will install and run once you've gone too far, you'll just have to call MS.

If it's the same chipset, it will probably boot right up: I did it 2 weeks ago.

If it's a different chipset, at least run Windows Repair.

I installed Windows XP in an ABIT NF7-S ver2.0 with 1800+ tbred and it is being used in a via KT266A (with onboard graphics) with 1700+ Palomino. Totally different soundcard, mobo etc. No problems. It just did the "found new hardware" for 10 minutes during the first boot. After I updated the drivers, all was merry.

When I changed from my D850MV 2 gig to my D875PBZ 3 gig, I just called the 800 number listed at registration, and they gave me a code. Of course, I have a legal copy of XP to begin with.

no but in all seriousness, id just do a fresh install, windows is so gay when it comes to things like this.

you will find out shortly even if it works how things never feel the same or as "fast" as a fresh install would...... i dunno maybe its just me...

dont have to activate, even with some "legal" copies
