swapping out 8400 for Q9650

So, my first step into speeding up my 24/7 machine is going to be swapping out the cpu.

My steps will be:
of course unplug everything
take out cmos
do the swap
and reverse the breakdown steps

Am I missing anything? yes my mobo should support this chip; Asus P5Q Premium running 1611 bios...

please advise, thanks,

You don't have to remove the CMOS battery (I assume that's what you meant). You can just short the reset pins for a few seconds. I'm running a Q9400 on the same board. SUPER easy overclocking it...even with the Quad core. My 24/7, (near silent) setup is 460/7 with the RAM at 5-5-5-30, 5/6 divider. Intel Burn Test 15 passes at maximum, and 24 hours or P95 test says it's stable.

Depending on what you do with the computer, you could see some real gains in the CPU swap.

How many ram sticks are you using maluckey?

I'm Using 2 x 2gb and WIndows XP 64-bit. I've run this RAM faster, but I'm looking for as fast as I can go and still be virtually silent. I'm not so tolerant of noise nowadays.

It's in folks and running smoothly. Actually my temp readings are 30,30,36,36 - where as my C0 8400 was reading 37,37 - So my worries about it running a little bit hotter are null.... wait, lemme put the side cover on and see.. hah, no, but I'm sure it won't get .... (side cover is on) - seems to be on par with my ambients :)

Thanks

My only other suggestion before the swap would be to set the FSB and multi low to allow the new CPU an easy chance at POST during the initial boot up.

How's the stability, BTRY?

Are you going to overclock that sucker past 4GHz? :D

Hah, no, I think from learning that there are problems with the UD3's (P45) coming out of Sleep mode, it'll stay in this P5Q board. First of all it's in a case I probably will never cut cause im doo doo over it, teeh and secondly, although I do have a TRUE on it, I don't have the exotic cooling i'd like to make it happen in this setup. If it was my older PC-60 case, i'd probably cut the shit out of it, which I still have that template you gave me for a 2x120 rad mount still taped on top of it, i just have to find the initiative to cut into it and see where it takes me from there. I do still have the 655, micro-res, rev2; and a few extra blocks, witch btw, i have that extra universal EK Supreme if any of you just want to pay for the shipping its yours. It needs a good clean-out. I never used it but someone else did here on the forums... comes with the universal backplate kit... ... Sorry to sway from the question hah, but all those things work against overclocking it. It is a newer Q9650 SLB8W L836-B-361 and I bet it overclocks good as well but if I ever do it won't be until winter when temps are constant 71*f in this back room; and maybe 3.6Ghz at the most on this board... I don't want to push it with all the mem slots being used... its my baby and it needs me to love it :D

EDIT: it's stable & actually runs Vista 64 U. alot smoother than my 8400

BTRY, you need to update your sig:

-------------------------
8x500fsb Q9650 @ 4Ghz

I would be really impressed if you managed to get a FSB speed of 500MHz with that chip and MB (4.5GHz overclock ).

That's my game rig! :D

I swapped out my 8400 for my second (NIB) Q9650 = 2 quad machines now... game in sig, and this is my 24/7

Yes, I did try a 9 mulit with 500fsb and i did get into OS but crapped out in a second, I think that was 1.5vcore... that UD3 board can take it :D

4GHz o/c isn't shabby and much healthier for the chip than 4.5GHz at 1.5V.

lol i know. i was just curios :)

I'd be very impressed if this Asus P5Q Premium did 500fsb with this Quad...

I hear Lynnfield is suppose to be a really good chip daw. what do you think aboutem?

Dont hold your breathe.. you'll be lucky if u get 470fsb +

and id rather get a 920 D0 over a i5 and use a dedicated video card.

That's what I meant. Most 775 lga mobo's won't do 500fsb with a quad... as it is though, I'll never push this board and chip... to be continued :D

I'm not sure on the performance side of things. I think Intel will (if need be) artificially limit the performance to slightly below the I7 in a single GPU set up, since they don't want to take sales from the more expensive I7. Also, no one knows how well it will overclock. If it's a crap overclocker, then the I7 will slaughter it.

Its early days yet and I'm going to wait for more reviews to come out.

Since I'm going with a multi-GPU set-up (2x HD4870 X2s), I7 is a better option for me.

Supposedly, Aigo is getting his hands on a Gulftown (32nm hex-core) chip; lucky b*stard :D.
