I know it's been possible to swap motherboards by restoring ide controller to the default windows driver, but what about sata drives? Does windows have a standard sata driver preinstalled? Just curious if this is possible to do, so I can save myself a reinstall.

This is a very subjective topic and it's never 100% fool proof that even on PATA the swap will be error free. The bottom line is go with the swap. When you boot hopefully XP will boot and will request for updated drivers for the new mobo. What I recommend is removing all old mobo drivers, shut down and then swap. Make sure you have the cd for the new mobo ready. Worse comes to worst is to do a repair installation. You will lose updates on XP but all your programs will stay the same. You will also require a re-activation of XP.
