Swapping M/B without OS re-install - HAL issue...

i am in the process of kicking around the idea of switching over to the asrock agp/pci-e m/b and a opteron 144 or 146.

i don't want to reinstall my OS and i have read this article many times -http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=34&threadid=1688660&enterthread=y
which helped me out when switching my intel boards our (both i865pe based).

the article states that if the hal is the same, then there should be no problem changing m/bs without a re-install. so i visited the ms hal info page - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283/
and i found something interesting.

my machine in rig is listed in the device manager as a ACPI Multiprocessor PC, which according to ms link, should use the Halmacpi.dll drive, but it does not. when i double click on it in the device manager, it lists the driver as hal.dll.

now when i click on my xp2000 rig's info, it is listed as ACPI Uniprocessor PC, again with hal.dll, but according to the ms site it should be Halaacpi.dll.

can somebody please explain this to me because ms own tech info is not accurate to my pcs....😕

For what it's worth I am running on a multiprocessor rig, and my hal is also listed as hal.dll. What is probably going on is that hal.dll in turn loads the actual driver dll.

how do you think it would work if before i made the switch to a single core cpu, i switched ht off, so in effect the os would think i have 1 cpu (even though i do, but you know the p4ht thing)?

Personally, if it were me, and there was not some very compelling reason not to, I would reinstall the O/S.

By the time you figure your problem(s) out, you could probably be reinstalled & up and running.

Good luck.

i would do that, but this install has been trouble free for ~1.5yrs and is tweaked just the way i like it and has quite a few program. it would turn a quick m/b, cpu swap into an all day affair (if i could guarantee the m/b, cpu switch wouldn't f*ck everything up.....)
