swapping lcd displays

ok.. i have an ASUS m5200 laptop with a broken screen.. i tried putting the screen from a dell c400 into it.. both are 12.1 inch 1024x768..

the dell screen doesn't work in it though..

i figured out what the inverter is.. what does the inverter do? basically supply the power?

what different factors are there that differentiate lcd screens? i know there is contrast ratio and response time.. are these things that would make one inverter not power another screen?

finally.. what information from the back of the broken lcd would help me find a new lcd that would work?

i am looking to scour ebay and find a cheap lcd that will work, not to spend $150-250 on a new/reman lcd...
