swapping laptop harddrive w/o reintalling winxp?

I just got my compaq presario 2100 laptop today. Is there any way for me to swap the hard drive that using on my old Thinkpad w/o reinstalling xp??? for some reason, the new compaq won't let win xp to boot after I put the old hard drive in it. thanks in advance.
