Swapping in international keyboard on US Surface Pro?

For my retired dad who travels back and forth to Europe and still writes scholarly articles in multiple languages, the US version of the MS Surface Pro with an extra Spanish (yay Spain) keyboard seems almost too good to be true. The key (no pun intended) being that a Spanish keyboard makes typing Spanish with its accents and tildes much, much easier when writing in Spanish. It seems easy enough to do something similar with an ordinary PC (e.g. a Russian colleague used a Russian keyboard at the office here in the USA with US English Windows 7). Any thoughts on if this would "just work"?
