Swapping HDD to new box

Hey guys-
I have a hard drive running windows xp in a given box that I built, and I want to take it out and put it into a new build. Is it easy as dropping this existing HDD into the new box and having everything work? Please advise on any specifics I may need to know regarding this, or if this will simply work as I hope it will.

Also, what is involved in transferring the exact image of my HDD onto a new HDD?

Thanks in advance.

John

The chance of it working is 1 in 10, as the drives for the mobo are all wrong.
If you do get a post and boot you can do an OS repair install, and update the mobo drivers later (9.5/10).
A clean install is best, but you have to reinstall all your programs and backed up data (10/10).

The new drive will come with (or you can download, from the manufacturer) cloning software.
Just follow the prompts.

You're better off reinstalling Windows.

As for disk imaging, a good software tool is Acronis True Image Home, but that's more for if you're swapping your OS partition from one drive to another, not from computer-to-computer, which would have different hardware, and in turn, different drivers with the said OS partition.
