Swapping CPU's

I have a machine that runs some equipment I built a few years ago, that I mistakenly put together with a 3.xG Pentium D because I didn't wanna spend the dollars on a Core2Duo at the time.

This computer I'm typing on is my main machine and it's a Quad Core processor. I'd like to put this processor in the other machine (the board supports it) and upgrade this processor to the newer Quad with more cache.

Both machines run good and have several software updates on them that would be a royal Pain in the Patukas to have to reinstall. I'm thinking that if I use processors that both motherboards support, there should be no reinstallation of the operating system.

So is this a safe assumption? What processor can I go up to on this computer here, using the IP 35Pro board?

Hi SD PC,

yes: as long as the BIOS supports the CPU, should be a drop in replacement. I do not think you need to update drivers, etc, since the CPU is not just close to "bare metal", it IS the bare metal. BIOS should detect it, and deal with it.

Should run cooler, better, faster--

Yeah. You'll be fine as long as there's BIOS support. I dropped in a Q6600 from an E6400 a few years back when they came out and was fine.
