Swapping CD-RW units - what about Nero?

Guys,

I'm getting ready to swap out a Yamaha 24x10x40 IDE burner for a LiteOn 48x12x48 unit. I have some questions - first, will the version of Nero I have installed for the Yamaha drive be compatible w/ the LiteOn drive? In other words, are the versions of Nero packaged w/ burners compatible between burners, or are they specific to the burner w/ which they're packaged?

Second, do the updates that Ahead provides via their website universally apply to the version(s) of Nero supplied w/ a burner? And third, are there any compatibility issues between the versions of InCD supplied w/ different burners?

If you have any experience/knowledge re these questions I'll be appreciative of any replies,

Jeff

The OEM nero "only works with the burner it came with" that said it might be ok with liteon since it is packaged with nero a lot, YMMV

The updates from Nero's site will work fine on your OEM version, provided it's not too old. Look at their upgrade path and note that you can't upgrade an older version (like 4.x) to the latest version. You can only upgrade within versions.

Didn't your new Lite-on come with it's own copy of Nero?

I have found that some bundled copies of Nero only work with the burner they are supplied with while other universally work with any burners. A local PC store used to sell OEM copies of Nero 5.0 that worked with any burner, plus I knew a guy there so I used to buy that and then upgrade it for free to Nero 5.5 from the web!...for 25% the price 🙂

But yeah....all the Lite-ON drives I have encountered have an OEM copy of Nero whether the drive is OEM or retail itself! I have found this to be so with all OEM Cd-Writers I have supplied in fact. Nero 5.0 or later can be upgraded to the latest nero for free whether the original is full retail or bundled OEM (I think the latest is 5.5.9.0 but could be wrong).

I have the same Yamaha recorder that you do, and I can say that the Nero that comes with it only supports the Yamaha drive. I tried using it while testing out a Phillips, and it simply refused to work with it.

Guys, thanks for the replies. I'll go ahead and uninstall the Nero that came w/ my Yamaha drive and reinstall the CD that acompanies the LiteOn drive.
