Swapping cd drive for dvd drive question

I just rec'd a toshiba 1715xcds laptop for reformatting someones computer. I know its not a great laptop but its free. This is my 1st laptop and was wanting to use it as a dvd player for the kids to watch in the car. Will any slim dvd drive work and is it hard to replace. I can work on desktops but Im kind of scared to open up any laptops. I just ordered an extra 128 megs of ram for it. Thanks
